The first children using onetab

February 26th, 2020

Children in Nkhotakota, Malawi, are the first in the world to be using onetab devices in their school, thanks to our partners The Tongole Foundation.

10 onetabs – charged by solar – are being used by 60 children in Standards 2 and 3 as a supplement to normal classes. The children are using the adaptive mode of onecourse, which rapidly assesses their reading and maths level to provide a personalised study and play session each day. Digital teacher Alefa gives the children instructions and praise in Chichewa, while real-life teachers at the school provide extra scaffolding.

The purpose of the trial is to improve learning outcomes in reading and maths for early grade learners, and to test the durability and suitability of the onetab device. Tongole and onebillion will collect data and feedback in order to inform future implementation models.
